Reclaiming joy and playfulness in midlife isn’t frivolous ~ it’s foundational.
Learn how simple, soulful moments of play can help women over 40 reconnect with their true selves, reduce stress, and reignite creativity.
Reclaiming Joy and Playfulness in Midlife
When was the last time you let yourself laugh until your stomach hurt, danced in the kitchen, or tried something new just for fun? If it’s been a while, you’re not alone. For many women, midlife feels like a time to get “serious,” but at Reclaim Her, we believe it’s the perfect time to bring joy and playfulness back into your life.
Why Do We Lose Our Sense of Play?
Somewhere along the way, we often trade our sense of play for responsibilities, productivity, and the endless to-do list. The demands of work, family, and daily life take centre stage, and before we know it, joy becomes an afterthought. While those responsibilities are important, life without joy can feel flat and uninspiring.
The truth is, play isn’t just for kids ~ it’s a vital part of our emotional and mental well-being.
It’s how we stay connected to our creativity, our curiosity, and our ability to find light in the everyday.
How to Reignite Your Playful Spark
If life feels heavy or routines have taken over, the thought of play might seem distant. But the good news is, you don’t need to overhaul your life to invite joy back in.
Start small.
Play doesn’t have to mean big, extravagant activities.
It’s about tapping into the things that make your heart feel light.
- Follow Your Curiosity: Think back to what used to bring you joy. Was it painting, dancing, or writing? Maybe you’ve always wanted to explore a new hobby but never made time for it. Now is your chance.
- Incorporate Play into Everyday Life: Playfulness can be as simple as doodling while you have your morning coffee, singing in the shower, or trying a new recipe just for the fun of it.
- Reconnect with Nature: Walk barefoot in the grass, swim in the ocean, or climb a tree just to remind yourself what it feels like to be free. Nature has a way of bringing us back to the present moment.
- Surround Yourself with Playful People: Laughter is contagious. Spend time with people who encourage fun, spontaneity, and lightheartedness. Let their energy remind you that it’s okay to let go.
The Power of Permission
The key to reclaiming joy is giving yourself permission to enjoy life. This might feel uncomfortable at first, especially if you’ve spent years prioritising others.
But remember, playfulness isn’t indulgent ~ it’s an essential part of a fulfilling life.
It keeps us resilient, helps us navigate stress, and reminds us that life is more than just a checklist of achievements.
Finding Joy in Community
One of my favourite ways to reconnect with joy is by spending time with other women on the same journey. At Reclaim Her, our retreats and gatherings are designed not just for reflection, but for laughter, fun, and shared experiences.
There’s something magical about seeing women let go of their “shoulds” and embrace the beauty of just being present. When we create space for joy together, it becomes even more powerful.
You deserve to feel seen and heard, even if the person seeing and hearing you is yourself.
Reclaiming your identity isn’t about turning away from the people you love ~ it’s about stepping fully into yourself so that you can continue to show up in the world with authenticity, joy, and purpose.
Let me share a secret: identity is not fixed. It evolves with every season of life, and there’s no better time than now to shape yours with intention.
Your Invitation to Play
So today, I challenge you:
What’s one playful thing you can do for yourself?
~ Maybe it’s as simple as dancing to your favourite song
~ Trying a new hobby
~ watching a movie that makes you laugh.
Whatever it is, let it be yours ~ and let it remind you that life is meant to be enjoyed.
Your joy isn’t just a gift to yourself; it’s a light that radiates to everyone around you. Let’s bring it back, together.
